Ace of Spades

Motörhead performing Ace of Spades on the Young Ones (1984) The Young Ones incorporated musical numbers into the show in a very cool way, so that it was part of the story. The show introduced me to Motorhead & the Damned! How about that?

Feed Me (Git It)

Rick Moranis and Levi Stubbs in Little Shop of Horrors, (1986).

Last of my installments based on musicals I played in. There were four, but apparently no one's ever heard of the adaptation of A Christmas Carol that my high school's ex-choir director wrote. Regardless, this was the most fun.

All You Can Eat

The Fat Boys in Krush Groove. (1985) I love Prince Markie Dee's coonskin cap. It's hell of fashion forward backward & futuristic all at the same time. He knew that i would bring them back.

There Are Worse Things I Could Do

Stockard Channing in Grease!, (1978).

Not the best musical ever, in fact this was one of the few tracks that didn't make me want to puncture my eardrums, but I decided I would post all the musicals I played in the pit for and Grease! was my second. I actually had an acting part too, but there are no good videos of "Born to Hand Jive" on the youtube.

Lust For Life

Musicals are one thing, but the way they used music in the 94 minute long advertisement for being a Scottish f*ck up called Trainspotting was very MUSICAL. As in, the soundtrack told the story. The movie would be a very different movie without the music. It was a great soundtrack as well, i listened to it many times. The book is quite good too. Iggy & the Stooges performing Lust for Life from the movie Trainspotting (1996)

CROSS-OVER: BRAIN STORM: THE LOST LOST RAP

From my blog BRAIN STORM: THE GOBLINKO CONCEPTUAL ENGINE.
The total absurdity of alot of TV is easy to dismiss as merely absurd, but occasionally, the absurdity is cloaking actual important nodes of cultural information. I'm not enough of a pencil necked geek academic to go into how it works, you know it when you see it is good enough for me. Anyhow, i figure that if i still remember & am amused by Barney Rubble dressing up as "CD RAPPER" & am almost dying while watching Shabba Doo teach Captain Lou Albano & Danny Wells how to breakdance. The insane level of sound effects added on in that last bit is the high point.

SUBWAY!

The Muppets on episode 666 of Sesame Street (1974)
Kids media is usually the most music saturated of all media output, but most of the songs are such crap these days. Early period Sesame Street is a total exception, with a real quality group of song-writers & performers doing the numbers.

School's Out

Alice Cooper & the Muppets gang on the Muppet Show (1978) The Muppet Show introduced me to Alice Cooper & insured his status as cool in my book. This is a great argument for sitting on the fence between shock & show business, Alice Cooper keeps it all just nice enough to be able to go on a show that has a 50% kids audience like the Muppet Show, but is also creepy & rock & roll enough to be cool. You couldn't say that about someone like Marilyn Manson who just goes too far, even though he's probably more commercial than Alice Cooper was (weird!).
